AMR Signature Respite Inn
AMR Signature Respite Inn

136 7th Street
Mt. Airy, GA 30563
Lawton Place Manor is the 2nd of our AMR Signature Respite Inns. It was completed in 1879 by then-U.S. Ambassador Alexander Lawton and his family as a summer home away from the heat and humidity of Savannah. At the time it was built, Ambassador Lawton named this property "The Oakes". The name was later changed to Lawton Place Manor. This beautiful manor home was also (briefly in 1957) the home of legendary baseball player Ty Cobb. The community today still refers to it as "The Ty Cobb House". In most recent history, the property served as a popular small wedding venue.
In the Winter of 2020, Lawton Place Manor opened for guests as a non-profit respite inn exclusively for parents & caregivers who have loved ones with disabilities and/or chronic illness. We rely entirely on donations to support the part-time staffing and maintenance of the property, so retreats can be affordable (even free!) to caregivers.
Contributions from individuals, businesses, churches, foundations, etc make our respite retreats affordable to all caregivers.

Tremendous personal thought and care has been put into the interior decor and design of the inn to maximize comfort for the guests. Our Founder, Executive Director, & Head Innkeeper's design style provides guests with a true feeling of sanctuary, with a mix of period antiques, unique lighting, and comfortable cottage-style furnishings. The Manor House boasts five large guest rooms with five and a half baths. The Cottage holds two guest rooms with a full bath, living room, & kitchenette. Surrounded by both enclosed and open porches, plus a beautiful in-ground pool and lush gardens, our guests will have many cozy spots to rest.
