Lawton Place Manor, the second AMR Signature Respite Inn, was built in 1879 by U.S. Ambassador Alexander Lawton as a summer retreat named "The Oakes." Later renamed Lawton Place Manor, it briefly housed baseball legend Ty Cobb in 1957, earning the local nickname "The Ty Cobb House." Most recently, it served as a small wedding venue.
Since Winter 2020, this non-profit respite inn has welcomed parents and caregivers of loved ones with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Operating solely on donations, the inn offers affordable or free retreats, supported by contributions from individuals, businesses, churches, and foundations.
The manor’s interior, thoughtfully designed by our Founder, Executive Director, and Head Innkeeper, blends period antiques, unique lighting, and cozy cottage-style furnishings to create a sanctuary-like atmosphere. The Manor House features five spacious guest rooms with five and a half baths, while The Cottage includes two guest rooms, a full bath, a living room, and a kitchenette. Surrounded by porches, a beautiful in-ground pool, and lush gardens, guests find plenty of tranquil spots to relax.
